Plan: Widen I-81 In City - General Assembly Will Consider Proposals

Interstate 81 could be widened to three lanes in each direction through Harrisonburg under a state proposal seeking to identify solutions to traffic woes on the artery. On Tuesday, after months of hearings and research, the Commonwealth Transportation Board approved its Interstate 81 corridor improvement plan, which includes expanding the interstate to three lanes between mile markers 243 and 248.

A day after a jury heard testimony from eyewitnesses to Kamau Iman's slaying, prosecutors on Wednesday turned to social media posts, cellphone evidence and jailhouse informants in their case against Olmedo Pena Pinedo. Pinedo, 26, of Harrisonburg, is charged with first-degree murder, two counts of armed robbery, assault by mob and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in the Oct. 19, 2017, shooting in the Hunters Ridge apartment complex.

Alberto Pinedo Lafferty Jr. was angry a 17-year-old girl stole $5,600 from him minutes after they had sex, Commonwealth's Attorney Marsha Garst told jurors Tuesday during opening arguments of his cousin's murder trial. To get back at her, Garst said, Lafferty and Olmedo Pena Pinedo planned to rob Tiffany Mathias Bowman during a drug deal arranged by their friend, Shane Pouncey.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances that led to a man being hit by a car late Friday afternoon while crossing North Mason Street.
